Acute Otitis Externa (AOE) -also known as Swimmer’s Ear”- is a common problem encountered in emergency medicine especially in the summer months. The symptoms are ear discomfort (ranging from pruritus till severe pain), otorrhea (ear discharge) and in case of severe swelling, aural fullness and loss of hearing.

In 2017, 2.4 million U.S. health care visits resulted in a diagnosis of AOE annually which represents 0.8% of the visits.

AOE has a relevant social and economic impact. Despite most cases are mild to moderate, AOE can prevent patients from attending school or work.

Otidry-MD® ear spray is a medical product aimed at preventing
diffuse acute otitis externa (“swimmer’s ear”).

Otidry-MD® ear spray has a triple action in the ear canal:

1) Evaporates excess water
2) Recovers the physiological pH
3) Protects the skin that covers it

How does it work?

OTIDRY-MD® ear spray dries the external ear canal and relieves the sensation of a clogged ear due to water that can accumulate during daily hygiene, water sports or after staying in humid environments.

More about swimmer’s ear

Acute Otitis Externa (also known as “swimmer’s ear”) is a diffuse inflammation of the external ear canal, which may also involve the auricle or the tympanic membrane.

Nearly all cases of Acute Otitis Externa are bacterial.
The most common pathogens are Pseudomonas aeruginosa (20%-60% prevalence) and Staphylococcus aureus (10%-70% prevalence), often occurring as a polymicrobial infection.

The most common cause of infection is excess moisture trapped in the external ear canal of showers, swimming, baths in the pool or hot springs and wet climates.

Other causes predisposing is excessive duct cleaning with inappropriate elements that generate local trauma and injuries due to scratching. Also changes in skin pH by washing with soapy water or using alkaline drops.
